Antique Salter No. 50 28 lb Scale in Original Green, England, c. 1920s–30s

A beautifully preserved Salter No. 50 mechanical scale, made in England and dating approximately to the 1920s–30s.

Constructed with a substantial cast-metal body finished in its original green, the scale features a wonderfully aged brass dial marked SALTER No. 50, Made in England, and graduated in both pounds and English catties. The outer scale measures to 28 pounds.

Its original surface is particularly compelling. Decades of use have worn portions of the green finish along the weighing cradle, revealing the darker metal beneath, while the brass dial has developed a warm, naturally aged surface. The removable steel weighing pan retains heavy oxidation to its interior and a deep bronze-gold toned finish to its underside.

The piece has been carefully cleaned to remove accumulated surface grime while deliberately preserving its original paint, oxidation, wear and patina. It has not been stripped, repainted or polished.

More than a utilitarian kitchen object, the No. 50 has a sculptural industrial quality that makes it equally compelling displayed on an open kitchen shelf, console, work table or amongst a collection of early domestic objects.

Wear throughout is consistent with age and use, including paint loss, scratches, oxidation, surface corrosion and discolouration. The steel pan shows extensive stable oxidation, particularly to the interior. These elements have intentionally been retained as part of the object's history and character.
