Signed Chalet Canada Orange Spike & Curl Art Glass Centerpiece, c. 1960s–70s

A dramatic signed art glass centerpiece by Chalet Artistic Glass, produced in Cornwall, Ontario during the height of Canadian mid-century studio glass.

Hand-formed in saturated tangerine-orange glass cased in clear crystal, the centerpiece rises into an expressive arrangement of elongated points and tightly curled arms. The molten glass was pulled and shaped while hot, giving the piece its fluid, almost calligraphic silhouette and ensuring that no two examples are exactly alike.

The clear crystal casing becomes particularly pronounced along the curled ends and substantial sculptural base, framing the vivid orange interior and amplifying the movement of the form. Viewed from different angles, the overlapping arms create continually changing lines, reflections and concentrations of colour.

This sculptural “spike and curl” form is closely associated with Chalet's production and demonstrates the theatrical, free-form approach for which the Canadian glassworks became known during the 1960s and 1970s. Specialist Chalet research documents both spike-and-curl and related curled centerpiece forms as part of the firm's production.

Condition

Very good vintage condition with light age-appropriate surface wear. The glass retains excellent clarity and strong colour, and the etched Chalet Canada signature remains clearly visible.
