František Vízner for Heřmanova Huť Model 20121 Glass Jardinière, Czechoslovakia

František Vízner for Heřmanova Huť Model 20121 Glass Jardinière, Czechoslovakia

$950.00

A substantial pressed-glass jardinière designed by Czech glass artist František Vízner for Heřmanova huť, part of the celebrated Czechoslovak pressed-glass industry that would become associated with Sklo Union.

Catalogued as model 20121, the design is distinguished by its broad rectangular form, finely ribbed surface and raised square pedestal. The clear glass emphasizes the geometry of the piece, with closely spaced horizontal lines creating subtle shifts in light across its unusually heavy form.

Although described in period references as a jardinière, the piece works equally well as a sculptural centrepiece, low vessel or display object. Its large scale and nearly six-pound weight give it a particularly architectural presence.

Vízner was among the most important Czech glass designers of the postwar period. During the early 1960s, he developed a series of pressed-glass designs that explored simple geometric forms, substantial wall thickness and the optical properties of moulded glass. He later became internationally known for his highly refined studio glass. His industrial pressed-glass work remains an important early chapter of his career. Vízner worked within the Sklo Union design environment from 1962 to 1967.
