Renato Toso “Sassi” Murano Glass Sculpture for Fratelli Toso, 1969
Designed by Renato Toso for Fratelli Toso in 1969, this sculptural glass object belongs to the Sassi series, a collection inspired by the simple, rounded forms of stones.
The substantial solid-glass form is shaped into a softly tapered, almost egg-like silhouette. Clear Murano crystal forms the body while a deep black glass section caps the upper portion, creating a striking division between transparency and opacity. Viewed from different angles, the thick crystal distorts and reflects its surroundings, giving the piece an architectural presence despite its compact scale.
The Sassi series reflects the experimentation taking place in Murano during the late 1960s, when traditional glassmaking techniques were increasingly being applied to restrained, modernist forms.
This example retains its original Fratelli Toso Vetreria Murano label, an important detail that confirms the manufacturer and strengthens its collectibility.
Designed as both a sculptural object and functional paperweight, it works particularly well as a standalone object on a desk, console, bookshelf or within a collection of postwar Italian glass.
