Edward Hald HZ48 Globe Vase for Orrefors, Sweden, c. 1930-1948
Designed by Edward Hald for Orrefors, the HZ48 is a beautifully restrained example of early Swedish modern glass.
The vase takes the form of a substantial clear glass globe, with a low circular opening and softly rounded profile. Its simplicity allows the proportions and optical character of the hand-blown glass to take precedence, creating subtle distortions and reflections as light moves across the surface.
Hald joined Orrefors in 1917 and became one of the figures closely associated with the glassworks' international emergence during the early twentieth century. His work, alongside that of Simon Gate and the craftsmen at Orrefors, helped establish the refined visual language that became associated with Swedish Grace.
Model HZ48 is documented in period Orrefors production and auction records, including examples dated to approximately 1930-1948.
A quietly sculptural object on its own, the vase also works particularly well with simple floral arrangements or, as photographed here, filled with fruit.
